Capernaum was a small fishing village located along the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret, is a modest lake about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide and surrounded by mountains. The river Jordan enters the lake on the north side and exits to the south as it makes its way to the Dead Sea. According to the New Testament, Jesus lived at Capernaum during the beginning of his ministry. While there, Jesus healed several people and taught in the town synagogue. This is also the location of Simon Peter’s house, which is mentioned numerous times in the Gospels. Capernaum is one of the most important destinations for Christian tourists in Israel today.
